Indirect warping on rigid heald looms
In the past few days, many pre-wound warp yarns have entered new homes, and many people will soon try to place pre-wound warp yarns on their rigid heald looms for the first time. Most of us who are just starting to use rigid heald looms
may have only used the direct warping method, but placing the pre-wound warp on the loom is just as easy. There are many resources on the Internet, some You Tube videos, but not many ways through step-by-step photo tutorials. This is my
favorite way to learn because it makes it easy for you to follow the instructions while you work, don’t try to pause the video, or Hope it can get to the point, or slow down a bit.
Untie your warp first. You need to determine which end has a "cross". This is a crisscross pattern that keeps the threads in the correct order and prevents them from tangling when the warp yarns are wound. In the photo above, it is on
the right hand side and there are more ties at the end, including one around the cross itself and one in the ring above the cross. Before you assemble all the equipment, do not cut any ties.
Take a small bundle of warp yarns, fold the ends back, and tie an overhand knot to form a loop. Repeat this operation on all warp threads, then take a strong, smooth, and inelastic thick thread or thin rope, pass it through the first
circle of warp yarn, then wrap the binding thread around the front apron rod, and pass the thread through the next Loop the warp yarn and then back to the apron pole. Repeat until all the warp threads are connected and you need to
continue to pull the yarn through the loop while working. Pass the lashing wire through all the loops until you have similar tension, then tie the ends to the apron pole. Tighten the tension slightly and relax the lashing line until all
your loops feel that they have even tension.
