The Art of Roasting and Grinding India Spices

Origin and Cultivation of Indian Spices
Indian spices have their origins deep in the country's history. archeological evidence suggests that spices like turmeric, ginger, and pepper were extensively cultivated and traded in India as early as 2000 BC. The spice trade led to interactions between Indian kingdoms and other civilizations in West Asia and Rome. Over many centuries, Indian farmers perfected the art of growing a wide variety of spices despite the diverse climatic conditions. Even today, India accounts for more than 50% of the global production of many major spices like turmeric, chillies, and pepper. Some of the important spices grown in India and their cultivation regions are discussed below.
Turmeric is mainly grown in southern India Spices states like Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Kerala. It thrives well in damp, tropical climates and rich, well-draining soil. The turmeric plants are grown from rhizomes planted early in the wet season and harvested after 8-10 months when the leaves begin to dry up. After harvesting, the rhizomes are boiled, washed, and dried to obtain the bright yellow powder known globally as the "Golden Spice" of India.
Chilli peppers, the most consumed spice in India, are extensively cultivated in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka. India accounts for over 75% of global exports of chillies. Over hundreds of varieties are grown across diverse climatic conditions.
