Video Borescopes: A Valuable Tool for Inspection and Maintenance Video Borescopes: A Valuable Tool for Inspection and Maintenance

Industrial Video Borescopes are cameras on extremely long but flexible shafts that allow inspection of interior spaces that would otherwise be difficult or impossible to examine directly. These remote visual devices have proven invaluable for a wide range of inspection and maintenance applications across many industries.

Video borescopes, also called borescope cameras, are fiber optic inspection cameras that are used for examining the interior of many enclosed spaces, objects, and locations. These cameras have a small diameter, typically under 10 mm (0.39 in), that allows them to enter very narrow cavities. The flexible insertion tube can reach lengths over several meters.

At the tip of the flexible insertion tube is a rubberized tip and a small camera. Borescopes output high definition video either through a camera head with a built-in LCD screen or to an external monitor via USB, HDMI, or other video connections. This allows the interior space being inspected to effectively be seen from inside without having to open up the enclosure.

Industries that Benefit from Video Borescopes
Some of the industries that commonly utilize borescopes include:

- Aviation/Aerospace: Used to inspect the interior of aircraft engines, landing gear compartments, flaps, instrumentation, and other hard-to-reach areas. This allows issues to be identified without extensive teardowns.

- Oil and Gas: Pipeline and well inspection is a major use of borescopes. They can inspect for corrosion inside pipelines and well casings without shutting down or dismantling equipment. Refineries also use them for tank and vessel inspections.

- power generation: Both utilities operating conventional power plants as well as companies in the renewable energy sector benefit from borescopes. They are used to examine steam turbines, generators, wind turbine gearboxes, and solar collectors.

- Manufacturing: Facilitates inspection of castings, molds, and other production tooling. Also used during manufacturing quality control checks and to troubleshoot issues on the production line. Parts can be checked prior to assembly.

- Marine: Used to inspect the inner workings of ship engines, the inner hull for corrosion or cracks, rudder mechanisms, and other areas below decks that would otherwise require the ship to dock. Maintains vessel safety and operational readiness.

Common Inspection and Maintenance Applications
Beyond the core function of visual inspection, borescopes are invaluable problem-solving tools that support various maintenance applications. Some examples include:

- Leak Detection: Borescopes can effectively identify the source of fluid or air leaks inside enclosures, such as checking O-rings, seals, and pipe/hose connections that cannot easily be directly observed.

- Corrosion Monitoring: Over time, allows corrosion inside metal enclosures, pipes, tanks and vessels to be documented for rate analysis or to identify areas needing remediation before leaks occur.

- Removing Foreign Object Debris: Some borescopes come equipped with a small vacuum suction or grasper tool passed through the outer channel to remove small debris or tools left inside engines or machinery.

- Weld Inspections: Verifies integrity of welds inside pipes, pressure vessels, castings etc. without impractical disassembly. Finds cracks before critical failures happen.

- Maintaining Clearance: Validate proper clearances still exist around moving parts like turbine blades that can't be directly visually checked during operation otherwise.

- Troubleshooting: Rapidly identifies issues causing machine malfunctions by directly viewing parts interaction. Faster than disassembly-focused problem solving.

Industrial video borescopes have an extremely wide variety of use cases across sectors. Their ability to provide visualization access internally without disassembly makes them an indispensable tool for safety, quality, and efficiency.
