Complex Cross-Border Freight Flows

Moving vehicles and parts between the United States, Mexico and Canada involves navigating stringent documentation rules. Regulatory oversight of road freight transport differs among the NAFTA nations, affecting operations across borders. Further complicating flows are language barriers, varying standards for equipment, and infrastructure differences at border crossings. Logistics providers specializing in cross-border services have streamlined much of the process through IT systems and extensive relationships with port authorities. However, changing policies may still lead to delays until new procedures are harmonized. Future infrastructure projects must account for projected growth in commercial traffic across borders over the coming decades.

Vehicle Distribution and Final Mile Delivery

North America Automotive Logistics and cross-dock facilities, finished vehicles are transported long distances by truck, rail and ship to dealerships across each vast nation. In the United States, the industry relies heavily on road freight to reach buyers due to the country's dispersed population. Fleets specializing in roll-on/roll-off transport carry vehicles by the thousands via dedicated route networks. Final mile delivery often falls under the responsibility of individual dealers. Rural access poses issues, as transporting even a single vehicle becomes less economical over long distances. Further increasing the difficulty is securing commercial drivers amid an industry-wide shortage. These last-mile challenges will intensify with the e-commerce rise in home deliveries.

Quality Control Through Information Systems

To ensure consistent standards across assembly plants, global automakers extensively leverage information systems. Real-time status updates allow logisticians to monitor the condition and progress of parts and vehicles anywhere in transit using RFID tags, telematics, electronic logging and geofencing capabilities. If issues emerge, such as delays or quality complaints, supply chain personnel can quickly diagnose root causes and remedy situations to minimize disruptions. As connected vehicle technologies evolve, automakers will gain even greater visibility into how finished goods are distributed and serviced throughout ownership. Access to usage data may inform future upgrades to logistics networks and service strategies.
