Liver Detox: Unraveling the Mysteries of Detoxification A Closer Look Industry
The Main Phases of Liver Detoxification
The detoxifies both endogenous and exogenous toxins through a complex two-phase detoxification system.
Phase 1 reactions: During phase 1, the liver adds or exposes functional groups on toxic compounds with the help of cytochrome P450 enzymes, mainly the CYP1, CYP2 and CYP3 families. This makes the toxins more reactive so that they can be removed from the body. However, it also generates reactive intermediates that can damage Liver Detox cells if not eliminated quickly.
Phase 2 reactions: In phase 2, conjugating enzymes like glutathione S-transferases, sulfotransferases, N-acetyltransferases and UDP-glucuronosyltransferases in the liver convert the reactive intermediates formed in phase 1 into water-soluble compounds using co-factors like glutathione, sulfate and glucuronide. These water-soluble toxin conjugates can now be easily eliminated from the body through urine or bile.
How Can One Support Liver Detoxification?
There are certain foods and herbs that help support and enhance the liver's natural detoxification processes:
- Cruciferous vegetables: Broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower are rich sources of glucoraphanin and sulforaphane which induce various detoxifying enzymes in the liver.
- Garlic and onion: These spices contain organosulfur compounds that stimulate phase 2 detoxification enzymes. They also mobilize heavy metals and other fat-soluble toxins for excretion.
- Leafy greens: Leafy greens like kale, spinach and swiss chard are rich sources of antioxidants and support liver function. Chlorophyll also binds to toxins and aids their elimination.
- Beets: Beets are a great natural liver cleanser and contain betaine which supports the liver in flushing out toxins. They also contain antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds.
