How to Hang Steel Targets?
There are various ways to hang steel targets, and the method chosen depends on several factors such as the type of target, firearm and ammunition used, the desired functionality, portability, type of range, and most importantly, safety.
Target Angle
The angle at which the target is hung is crucial and dependent on several variables. Safety should always be the top priority, and the first step to hanging a steel target is to ensure its safety. Above all, you want the target to absorb as much shock as possible. Fixed or swinging targets should be pitched in a downward direction to push bullet splatter into the ground. Hanging or gong targets should be hung straight down. Reactive targets absorb the bullet energy.
Safe Distance
While having fun is important, safety should always be the top priority. When it comes to recommended distance, there are several factors to consider. A general rule of thumb is that the larger the caliber of the firearm, the greater the distance should be between the shooter and the target. Assuming that the target thickness is appropriate, it is recommended to be at least 25 yards away when using light to medium pistols, and 100 yards or more when using rifles.
Hanging Targets Loosely
When hanging gong or other types of targets, it's important to ensure that they are situated straight up and down and are allowed to hang naturally. This will result in a satisfying "ping" noise when struck and will help to prolong the life of the target.
Proper Height
When setting up a shooting range, it's important to determine the proper height for your targets. The height should be determined by the height of the backstop or berm behind the target. It's important to avoid setting the target too high, as this can encourage shots to go over the berm, which can be dangerous. A good rule of thumb is to have the backstop be at least twice the height of the target. Additionally, the target should be angled downward, so that the bullet will end up in the safe zone.
