What is the History of Vashisht Temple?
The Temple has deep roots in Hindu mythology. It is believed to have been built over 4,000 years ago and is named after Sage Vashisht, the Kula guru of Lord Rama in the village Vashisht across the River Beas. It is among the most famous sightseeing as well as the Best Tourist Place in Manali.
The village of Vashisht was named after Rishi Vashisht who was one of the seven sages of Hindu. According to the legend, Rishi Vashisht was sad after finding out that his children had been killed by Vishwamitra.
He was so sad that he attempted to end his life by jumping into a river but was saved by the river instead. He then started a new life in the village here. The river that took the Sage to the village was named Vipasha, meaning freedom from bondage. The Vipasha River is now known as the Beas River.
Inside the temple, there is a black stone image of the Rishi wearing a dhoti. The Vashist temple is decorated with excellent and beautiful carvings on wood with the traditional interiors which are ornamented with antique paintings and figures.
