Rigging Safety for Hybrid Moving Headlights

Rigging safety is a non-negotiable priority when working with heavy and motorized lighting fixtures such as hybrid moving headlights. These fixtures are often 20–50 lbs or more and mounted at heights over 20 feet.

Why Rigging Safety Is Critical

  • Injury Prevention: Falling fixtures can cause severe injury or death.

  • Equipment Protection: Improper rigging can damage lighting gear and trusses.

  • Legal Compliance: Most regions follow OSHA or local rigging safety codes.

Key Safety Practices

  1. Use Certified Hardware

    • Use O-clamps, half couplers, or cheeseboroughs rated for the fixture weight.

    • Never use plastic or makeshift attachments.

  2. Safety Cables

    • Must be steel-core, rated for at least 5x the weight of the fixture.

    • Loop through a secure rigging point—not the yoke or handle.

  3. Truss Inspection

    • Visually inspect all bolts and joints before mounting.

    • Confirm the truss is balanced and within weight limits.

  4. Personnel PPE

    • Hard hats, gloves, and harnesses must be used during overhead work.

  5. Load Testing

    • Use load calculators or software (like Vectorworks or Lightwright).

    • Know the Working Load Limit (WLL) of all components.
