The number of skulls at the top of the window during contract negotiations indicates the difficulty of the deal. It may be prudent to stick to 1-skull contracts if you're having trouble advancing if you're compensated based on the complexity of the task.

Caravan escort contracts are a deathtrap if the caravan is traveling to a location other than a nearby city. If you're unlucky, you may encounter many battles during a single voyage or multiple enemy groups at once.

Backgrounds define a character's initial numbers, not how much they improve per level, when you hire them.

The amount a stat can increase per level is determined by a stat's talent, which is represented by a small star next to the stat. They are fully random and independent of the character's history.

You must also pay for a character's equipment when you recruit them. When recruiting, be wary of spending a great deal of money on equipment you wouldn't ordinarily purchase due to the higher basic stats of expensive backgrounds.

It is generally preferable to have a smaller number of better-armed soldiers than a large number of poorly-armed warriors.

Weapons are always subordinate to armor. Being minimally armored is a death sentence against all but the weakest of foes, as they strike quickly and violently. The price of excellent armor is relatively low.

The most effective mercenaries are those with specialized skills, so determine their job based on their statistics and abilities early on and construct your army accordingly.

As your bannerman, you require a person with sky-high determination and adequate stamina. The mercenary holding the banner can use the Rally the Troops ability to boost the morale of all allies.

Shieldwall and Spearwall are excellent abilities, but they need a significant deal of stamina. It is preferable to conserve your stamina rather than waste it on ineffective abilities.
