Rhinoplasty: The Nose Job Procedure Explained

What is Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty, commonly known as a nose job, is a surgical procedure that is used to reshape and improve the appearance and proportion of the nose. The goal of rhinoplasty is to modify and enhance features of the nose to achieve better facial balance, proportions and aesthetics.

Reasons for Getting Rhinoplasty
There are several reasons why someone may choose to undergo Rhinoplasty. Some common reasons include: correcting a congenital problem or injury to the nose, reducing the size of a nose that is too large, lifting the tip of a drooping nose, reducing the visible size of the nostrils, refining the shape of the nose, correcting a deviated septum or respiratory problems. For some, it is simply to improve their overall appearance and self-confidence.

The Rhinoplasty Process
All rhinoplasty procedures involve making changes to the bone and cartilage structure of the nose. The surgery is performed under general anesthesia as an outpatient procedure. First, the nasal bones and cartilage are exposed either internally through the nostrils or through an additional small incision made between the nostrils. Then the surgeon carefully sculpts and shapes the new nasal structure with precisioninstruments. Broken or deviated bone is reset and grafts of bone or cartilage may be added or removed to change the shape and size of the nose. The incisions are closed with fine sutures or surgical tapes.
