'Park Hae-min dominated' LG sweeps Lotte in 3-game series
Park Hae-min gave the LG Twins their seventh straight win.
LG Twins defeated the Lotte Giants 9-6 on Friday at Sajik Stadium in Busan, South Korea, thanks to Park Hae-min's walk-off three-run double in the top of the 11th inning in extra innings.
The victory extended LG's winning streak to seven games, which began with a three-game weekend sweep of Lotte and ended on March 13 against Hanwha in Daejeon. It also extended its winning streak to four straight away from home and seven straight at Sajik Stadium.
The gap between first-place KIA and second-place LG narrowed to six games as the KIA Tigers lost 4-7 to the NC Dinos. On the other hand, the gap with third-place Samsung Lions, whose game was canceled due to rain, widened to three games.
Lotte has now lost four straight games and four straight at home. They are still in eighth place with 39 wins, three draws, and 51 losses.
LG suffered an unexpected setback in the bottom of the first inning. Choi Won-tae, who made his first start in 13 days due to an injury to Kwang Bae-geun, was ejected for throwing a head shot at Son Ho-young with runners on first and second in the bottom of the first inning. A four-pitch fastball on a one-ball, two-strike count hit Son in the helmet.
With Choi Won-tae automatically ejected, LG quickly brought in Lee Ji-gang in relief. In the ensuing one-out rally, Lotte capitalized on a sacrifice fly by Go Seung-min and back-to-back RBI singles by Jeon Jun-woo and Park Seung-wook to take a 4-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Lotte added another run on a throwing error by LG third baseman Moon Bo-kyung with two outs to extend the lead to 5-0.
But LG was not done. After failing to score a run against Lotte left-hander Kim Jin-wook through four innings, LG began its comeback in earnest with a three-run homer by 안전놀이터 Austin Dean in the top of the fifth. They added two more runs in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Oh Ji-hwan and an RBI single by Shin Min-jae in the eighth to tie the game at 5-5.
LG then scored a run in the bottom of the eighth, capitalizing on a throwing error by reliever Kim Yoo-young. However, in the top of the ninth, Koo Bon-hyuk tied the game again with an RBI single to center field to extend the game.
In the end, it was LG who had the last laugh in the extra innings. Tied 6-6 in the top of the 11th inning, LG had the bases loaded after an Austin walk, an error by Lotte third baseman Son Ho-young off the bat of Park Dong-won, and a walk to Koo Bon-hyuk.
Hae-min Park then took a second pitch from LOT reliever Choi Yi-joon and smashed a huge double over the center field fence, bringing all three runners home.
Park Hae-min was the game's top offensive performer, going 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs, including the game-winning hit. LG used nine pitchers, including Choi Won-tae, to pull off the upset.
In particular, eight relievers, including Lee Ji-kang, Kim Young-joon, Lim Jun-hyung, Kim Dae-hyun, Kim Yoo-young, Yoo Young-chan, Jung Woo-young, and Baek Seung-hyun, pitched 10⅔ innings of two-run (unearned) ball to set the stage for the victory.
Lotte, on the other hand, had a 6-5 lead, but reliever Kim Won-joong gave up one hit and two walks to tie the game in the top of the ninth.
