Ha Xia-shi, the teenage breakout PBA quarterfinal matchup
The 'Young Guns' who dominated the PBA's season opener will meet in the quarterfinals as the '16-year-old billiards prodigy' Kim Young-won (16) and 'teenage god of Turkiye' Burak Hashashi (18-High One Resort) won their quarterfinal matches side by side to advance to the semifinals.
Kim Young-won battled Hwang Duk-hee (Eswai) to a full-set victory in the quarterfinals of the Woori Financial Capital PBA Championship at the Goyang Kintex PBA Stadium in Goyang City, Gyeonggi-do, on Nov. 23, before coming from behind to win the set 3-2.
Kim Young-won fought back from a set down to defeat Hwang Duk-hee and reach the last four for the first time in her professional career. After dropping the first set 4-15 in six games, Kim turned the match around by taking the second set 15-3 (6 games).
Kim was again pushed to the brink when he dropped the third set 7-15 (7 games), but he managed to take the fourth set 15-8 (6 games) to level the match.
In the fifth set, Kim continued to battle back and forth, responding to Sun Gong Hwang's four points with five of her own. Trailing 7-8, Hwang scored two points in the seventh to make it 9-8. However, she missed a bank shot on the rebound immediately afterward. Kim Young-won took over the offense and scored the next three points to close out the fifth set 11-9.
"I thought (Hwang's) last shot was a hard shot to miss," Kim said, "I thought it was 토토 over, but when I didn't score, I thought, 'Oh, it's here,'" he said. "Now that I'm in the semifinals, I want to go to the final," he said, adding, "I'm enjoying gaining experience while playing against good players."
Kim Young-won will face fellow teenager Ha Xiaoxi in the quarterfinals for a ticket to the final. "She's really good. She's better than me," he said, adding, "I have to play harder in the semifinals."
In the quarterfinals, Hashashi defeated Lee Seung-jin 3-1 in straight sets. After taking the first set 15-11 (10 games), Hashashi dropped the second set 5-15 (9 games), but rebounded to take the third and fourth sets 15-8 (7 games) and 15-2 (6 games) to punch his ticket to the quarterfinals.
In the other quarterfinal match, Kang Dong-gung (SK Rent-a-Car) defeated Shin Jung-ju (Hana Card) in a close three-setter to reach the quarterfinals. Kang used an 11-0 run in the fifth set to win the match with the score tied at 2-2.
David Martinez (Spain-Crown Haetae) also reached the semifinals after defeating Choi Sung-won (Huons) 3-1 in straight sets.
On the final day of the tournament, Kim Young-won and Ha Xia-shi will play the first semifinal match at 12:30 noon. This will be followed by the second semifinal match between Kang Dong-gung and Martinez at 3:30pm. The winners of the semifinals will face off in the final match at 9 p.m. for the 100 million won prize.
