I guess I didn't think of them as events
The balloon events suck, but I truly dislike what they did with the Fishing Tourney and Bug-Off. On paper, catching a lot of fish and Animal Crossing Items bugs to get the gold decoration makes sense, but that I don't have enough time to dedicate to receive 300 at the middle of the afternoon. Especially in a game that's designed to be played only a little each day. And of course it's such a grind it takes away from your pleasure.
They maintained Summer was an event (that had balloon furniture) and today we're in Autumn which also has balloon furniture, and now I am probably forgetting more balloon furniture that I've completely disregarded.
I guess I didn't think of them as events. That's just become the subject of the recipes in the balloons: Spring'd bamboo-themed recipes.
Easter was ridiculous though, no arguments here.
You've summed up fairly nicely how I really feel about the match. Once I realised I did not care about decorating my house or speaking to villagers, and that is what the entire game is, I gave up.
I think my changing taste in games also contributed a huge role in my lack of curiosity about the most AC entry, but you are right. If you do not enjoy making the town/your home look fine there really isn't a whole lot to do besides complete the museum yet again.
Oddly enough, the thing I missed most about this game was that the mundanity of this. I didn't play with a lot of the later entries either, but I loved booting up that first GC match and only watering my plants, speaking to my villagers, and checking the store. It was so straightforward and Animal Crossing New Horizons Bells for sale so calming. I would anticipate in-game events for a whole week, or become so excited when a guest NPC was around the staircase.
