Teddy bears are soft, cuddly, and popular children's toys. They are generally covered in a variety of commercially available fabrics, most often cotton, chenille, or a synthetic fur. In the United States, teddy bears must meet certain standards for safety and construction to be marketed as "plush" toys for children. Teddy bears are a symbol of love and affection and are frequently given to signify sympathy, congratulations, or good luck. The name teddy bear stems from a 1902 political cartoon in the Washington Post that depicted a president refusing to shoot a wounded bear.

Many famous stuffed animals and characters are based on teddy bears, including Winnie-the-Pooh (by A. A. Milne), Paddington Bear (by Michael Bond), and Corduroy (by Richard Scarry). In Lilo and Stitch, Scrump is a homemade rag doll that is modeled on a teddy bear. While out-of-universe Disney merchandise and promotional imagery often portrays Scrump with Stitch, he is never actually shown to love the doll in the film canon. Rather, he treats her as more of a security blanket and only refers to her as "scary dolly" when she is possessed by Phantasmo.   Lilo and Stitch Teddys
