Silver jewellery makes a statement, but it can tarnish very quickly due to being worn close to the skin which attracts body oils, make-up, dirt, germs and so on. In order to keep your silver jewellery looking beautiful and shiny, it is essential that you clean it regularly. This can be done using a professional silver cleaner, or items found in your kitchen pantry. Ketchup is surprisingly effective at removing tarnishing, and can be used directly on the tarnished areas of your jewellery. Simply apply a few drops of ketchup on a paper towel and rub gently over the tarnishing area. Rinse with warm water and dry. Laundry detergent is another simple way to remove tarnishing from your silver jewellery. Mix a small amount of laundry detergent with hot water in a bowl lined with aluminium foil, add your jewellery and let it soak for a few minutes. The chemical reaction with the laundry detergent will eliminate the tarnishing from your jewellery.

You can also use vinegar to remove tarnishing from your silver pieces. In a glass dish, add a half cup of distilled white vinegar and two teaspoons of baking soda to eliminate tarnishing and restore shine to your silver jewellery. Soak for three hours, then rinse and dry your jewellery with a soft cloth.

Using a baking soda paste is an easy, natural and cheap alternative to expensive commercial silver cleaners. To make the paste, combine one part baking soda with three parts water. Apply the paste to your jewellery, using a soft lint-free cloth (not paper towels as they may scratch your silver). Gently rub and then wipe away any remaining residue with a soft, dry cloth.  how to clean silver jewellery
